Workdays for Adults and Youth in Service - WAYS

A Program of the Worcester Area Mission Society, UCC

Our Mission:

  • To assist non-profit human service agencies in maintenance or cleanup of their property and to assist homeowners, who are financially or in other ways unable care properly for their homes.
  • To gather people of Faith to work together in mission.

SPRING 2008 WAYS - Workday - Saturday May 3, 2008 - 9:00am - 5:00pm
Projects for this springs WAYS workday are emerging and are exciting!

Pernet Family Health Service www.pernetfamilyhealth.org is hoping for new shelving for their food pantry and some outside help with spring cleaning and a little simple landscaping. (church mission flash: Pernet also has a project looking for a group to take it on a different date: to check their old computers and decide what is worth saving and what is not....)

Camp Putnam, Fresh Air Camp (www.campputnam.org) could use help to get the camp ready for the summer.

A private home in Sterling could use some assistance.

Adults and youth in middle school or high school are invited to join us!

Like an old New England Barn Raising - we are neighbor helping neighbor..."

Volunteers
  • For ways to work smoothly, we need a good balance of people and skills
  • Experienced construction people (professional and non-professional)
  • Adults and Teens familiar with construction work
  • Adults and Teens who are willing to be instructed in simple tasks

Adults of All Ages are Welcome!

Youth Volunteers
  • All of our WAYS programs are planned for ages 14 through adult.
  • Many of our WAYS programs are also planned to include Middle School Youth.
[*Youth under 14 may only be eligible for certain locations due to the use of power tools at other locations.]
Dates
  • Our WAYS workdays are held on / or about the last Saturdays of April and October from 9AM to 5PM [unless there is an MACUCC conflict]

Cost: $10 per person

Sponsorship
  • Each WAYS participant is asked to raise a minimum of $20 from church, family, or friends. This money is used to purchase materials used in the work. Construction materials are expensive, so the more we receive the more we can offer in assistance.
  • Some congregations support the purchase of WAYS construction materials
    through local mission donations.
  • Middle School youth participants are not required to contribute sponsorship money but they are encouraged to make donations toward costs, as they are able.

[WAMS,UCC does not want any group to be prevented from participation by funding concerns. Please contact us if you need to negotiate the financial commitments.]

What to Expect
  • There may be 5 to 50 participants at any given site, depending on need, space
    and safety.
  • There will be several tasks on each site requiring different levels of skill.
  • We will accomplish the needed tasks and have a good time as we do it!
Tools
  • Participants will be asked to bring tools that are available to them and reusable materials, based on the site to which they are assigned.
(You will not be expected to purchase any tools or materials.)
