Katrina Recovery Programs - Instructions for Packing Donations |
THE PEOPLE OF THE NEW ORLEANS AREA ARE VERY STRESSED AND WORK HARD TO SURVIVE. THERE IS NO ONE THERE TO SORT YOUR DONATIONS OR COUNT BOOKS OR MARK BOXES. PLEASE – PACK ALL BOXES AND MARK ON 4 SIDES AS INDICATED BELOW!
If you can’t do this – please don’t send donations???!!!
(The most needed Donations are teacher resources and supplies. Dictionaries are also welcome)
Mailing:
- First Congregational Church in Auburn, MA will ship boxes of books.
They have a discount rate of $15 per box. Contact: "The Rev. Ken Knox" keknox@auburnfirstucc.org
- If self-shipping Media Mail seems to work best. Good Shepherd UCC, 5122 W. Esplanade, Metairie LA 70006, attention: Sheila Allred
- Box size is 24” X 18” or smaller. Please tape each box carefully, ready for shipping.
- Pack similar items in the same box – books, activities, teacher resources, supplies
- Books, activities, teacher resources -
should be packed with one to three grade levels per box as follows (these levels should be packed as pre-K & K / 1 & 2 / 3 > 5 / 6> 8 / High School)
- Clearly Mark on all 4 sides in large letters with a wide marker
- what is in the box (books, activities, teacher resources, supplies)
- what grade level(s) are they for
- if books - how many books are in the box
Supplies:
- As well as marking the boxes on 4 sides as above - On one side of the box clearly list exactly what is in the box. Put clear tape over this list of items completely covering the list so it cannot come off.
- Prepare for 35 children in a class
- Please send large amounts of paper in separate boxes and mark
- Suggestions:
- For Teachers, as is grade appropriate:
assorted sizes of post its, red pens, scotch tape, masking tape, tacky material for putting art work on the walls, chalk, erasers, markers, sharpie, liquid white out, large scissors, white board markers and erasers, paper clips, stapler and staples, a small tool kit (especially screw drivers), glass slides for telescopes, beakers,
- For students, as is age appropriate:
pencils, pencil sharpeners, erasers, crayons, blunt end scissors, rulers, protractors, compasses, colored pencils, highlighters, reinforcing circles for notebook paper, medium size sharp scissors
- Incentives for students:
bookmarks (non-religious), fancy erasers, cute stamps and stamp pads for the teachers to use, map placemats – USA or World maps
