Worcester’s diverse faith communities have been reaching out to their neighbors in need since 1829 when industrialist Ichabod Washburn established the City Missionary Society to help immigrants working on the Blackstone Canal. The opportunity to serve has never been greater than it is today as inner-city families, especially recent immigrants, turn in growing numbers to local congregations for assistance. Religious communities are responding with programs to enhance the academic and social skills of neighborhood youth as well as with initiatives in literacy, ESL, and computer training to help their parents. Expanding this vital network of community ministries is important toWorcester’s future as a vibrant city.
Please join other religious and civic leaders to hear Sylvia Johnson, a dynamic and informative speaker, and to meet leaders from social programs supported by the new Community Ministries Fund. The Fund was created by Worcester Area United Methodists and the Worcester Area Mission Society of the United Church of Christ and is managed by theGreater Worcester Community Foundation. Registration begins at 3:45 p.m. and the formalprogram will conclude by approximately 5:10 p.m. There will be ample time for informal conversation over refreshments.
